Renting a directory listing sounds fine until you do the math
If you are relying on Psychology Today, BetterHelp, Grow Therapy, Alma, Headway, or one of the other therapy
marketplaces to fill your caseload, here is what to know before you renew. Most of them work the same way, and none
of them leave you with anything you own.
A directory charges a monthly listing fee (roughly $30 to $60 for a profile) and puts you on a results page next to
dozens of other therapists. A marketplace takes a cut of every session you run through it, sometimes for as long as
that client stays with you. Either way the client belongs to the platform, not to you, and your visibility is shared
with everyone else in your area who is paying the same fee.
Let us run the math on what that actually means. Say you pay for a couple of directory listings and a marketplace
takes a meaningful slice of each session fee. On an ongoing weekly client worth $2,000+ in lifetime value, that cut
adds up fast, and the day you stop paying, your placement disappears and so do the inquiries. You rented visibility
and kept nothing.
Now compare owning your pipeline. Our flat plan is $1,500 a month, or $18,000 a year, and a single new therapy client
is worth roughly $2,000+ over the course of care. A couple of new clients a month covers the entire plan, and
everything past that is profit, on a website you own outright. That is the difference between renting a listing and
building your own pipeline. One model treats you like a line item. The other builds you an engine that compounds.
